Dr. Mark Olesen

Dr. Mark Olesen practices endodontics in North Vancouver. Since the year 2000 he has given small group ‘hands-on’ courses at his office.

Over 2300 dentists have attended.

Mark received his dental degree from the University of British Columbia in 1988. He practiced general dentistry for 6 years and then in 1996 completed the graduate program in endodontics at the University of Southern California.

Mission Statement

The goal of this educational clinic is to provide current and unbiased knowledge on the concepts and techniques of endodontic treatment. With greater knowledge and improved skills, it is hoped that participants will gain more confidence and enjoyment in endodontics and ultimately be able to provide better patient care.

With so many different products now being marketed, it can be very difficult for dentists to decide which ones to use. These courses are not sponsored by any company and Mark Olesen receives no financial gain from the companies whose products he uses. He is not affiliated with any dental company.

All files and other products used in the courses have been purchased at full market price or discounted for buying in bulk.

Course #1 Objectives:

  • To better understand why root canal treatment is not always successful.

  • To gain more knowledge and skills in order to increase success of root canal treatment.

  • To learn more about resolving difficult-to-anesthetize teeth.

  • To learn more about finding canals.

  • To learn more about how to negotiate to the terminus of the majority of ‘calcified’ canals.

  • To learn more about electronic apex locators.

  • To better understand the concepts of using rotary and reciprocating nickel titanium files to enlarge even the most severely curved canals.

  • To learn more about the various nickel titanium file systems presently available (rotary and reciprocating), the differences between them and their advantages and disadvantages.

  • To learn more about conserving dentin when shaping canals so that root fractures are hopefully less likely to develop in the future.

  • If there is a file system that you are comfortable with, to learn how to make it more effective and reduce the risk of file separation.

  • To learn more about irrigants used to clean root canal systems and how to use them safely.

  • To learn more about obturation of root canal systems. Single cone, vertical and lateral condensation techniques are discussed.

  • To learn more about antibiotic and pain medications in endodontics.

* WARNING: This course will not try to sell you on a particular brand of file. It will also not tell you how easy endodontic treatment is and that all canals can be shaped well and safely with the same 1-3 files.

What will be supplied for each participant:

  • Microscope (Global Surgical)

  • High & slow speed handpieces and burs

  • Electric handpiece for shaping with rotary and reciprocating files

  • Ultrasonic unit (P5)

  • Hand files

  • Rotary and reciprocating files – we supply: DCTaper, EdgeEndo, Hyflex, KontrolFlex II, Profile, ProTaper Gold and Ultimate, Scout, Sequence, Sequence CM, TruNatomy, Vortex Blue, WaveOne Gold. Advantages and disadvantages of each system are discussed as well as hybrid techniques. When one understands the concepts of rotary and reciprocating shaping, it should be easy to switch between most brands of files

  • Extracted teeth

  • Gutta percha for single cone, warm vertical and lateral obturation

  • Digital radiography

  • Gloves and masks

  • Lunch, drinks, and snacks

Course #2 Description

This 2-day course consists of a combination of lecture and laboratory exercises (about 50% lecture and 50% hands-on working with extracted teeth). Limited to 10 dentists. 18 hours of CE credit. Topics include re-treatment, removal of posts and separated instruments, MTA and similar materials, trauma, open apices, resorption, shaping and cleaning of difficult canal anatomy, and others. See Course Objectives below for more details.

The course material is relevant to all dentists, especially to those with a keen interest in diagnosing and treating complex endodontic cases. Dentists who have a microscope or who are considering acquiring one will find this course very useful.

The other 2-day Course #1 offered by Endodontics Unsponsored is titled Shaping, Cleaning, and Obturating Root Canal SystemsCourse #1 provides plenty of information that is useful for dentists who are inexperienced and very experienced in endo. Course #1 is more relevant to the endodontic problems seen in a general practice. It is NOT a requirement to take Course #1 prior to Course #2, but several dentists who have taken Course #2 first and then Course #1 at a later date have said that they wish that they had taken Course #1 first.  If taking both courses, we suggest AT LEAST 6-12 months between them.

Upcoming Course #2 Dates:

  • Friday and Saturday, May 24-25, 2024 – FULL
  • Friday and Saturday, June 21-22, 2024 – FULL
  • Friday and Saturday, July 5-6, 2024 – FULL
